Few days back, I was watching a live video feed in which some of the invited foreign speakers were giving their presentation behind a lectern. Each of them had different posture and had different position which was making the view little awkward.
What I personally felt was that their overall presentation could have been more effective if they had done the following things.
1. Instead of a traditional lectern, if they had used a new intelligent lectern, then the presentation could have been more flawless. After all, some new age lecterns are more sophisticated and advanced, feature large embedded touch screens that not only give the presenter to build more suspense in his story and show more confidence and excitement. But it also allows him or her to work seamlessly through multiple presentations.
2. If they had rested their hands gently on the corners of the lectern: because it is visually look very odd when speakers rest their elbows on any part of the lectern in a very uncomfortable way;so I believe if they could have rested their hands gently, that really helps showing more confident and credible than withered or shriveled. With this right position, you also will know that the lectern microphone is aimed correctly to maximize speech quality.

If you are going to speak behind a lectern to deliver your speech where you need to look more confident, then I strongly encourage you to maintain a good posture to make your overall performance more effective; and most importantly, make sure you use new sophisticated lecterns to have better control over your presentation.
